By reading the scripture above each day you will read the Old Testament through in one year and the New Testament through twice in a year. This will change your life. Start Today!
"If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways." (James 1:5-8)

TODAY'S WORD
, you are not at the mercy of every doubt that comes to your mind. Like the waves of the sea, doubts will come. However, you do not have to let them undermine your faith. Doubts can actually drive you back to God's promises, rather than cause you to back away from Him. The key is taking your questions directly to the Lord-then He can increase your faith.

Here are two definitions to help you identify doubt and respond to it with faith:

  • Doubt is a lack of confidence or assurance that God will keep His promises. The more you pay attention to doubt, the less you can see of God. Doubt can't diminish God, but it can limit your view of the One who has promised to be for you! Doubt undermines wisdom.
  • Faith is an active confidence that God's promises are always true. Faith is a glimpse of the majesty and awesomeness of God that obliterates the nagging unbelief of doubts. Your faith may not be huge, but it affirms your tiny, mustard-seed confidence that God is more than enough to meet the challenges in your life. Wise living is living by faith.

James, familiar with sailing on ships that were at the mercy of the winds and waves, described doubt in those terms: "The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind." What do winds do? Winds make the sea unstable. Waves move back and forth in a constant state of disruption. What wind does to water is what doubt can do to faith.

James 1:6 says we should pray with faith-"with no doubting." He has just told us that "trials" and"testing" are God's preferred method of training us into maturity (vv.2-4) and he lets us know we're going to need wisdom in order to exercise joy as the training unfolds. We're going to have to ask for it, expect it, and rely on it. If we don't get God's wisdom, we will end up "double-minded [and] unstable in all [our] ways."

So, ask God for wisdom. Ask with the humble faith of the man who said to Jesus, "I believe; help my unbelief," (Mark 9:24) and step forward with joy and the promised presence of God.

A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY

Lord, I thank You for the promise of wisdom if I will ask in faith. Thank You for encouraging me not to second-guess You. As I choose to face the trials of life with joy, remind me that I'm not relying on my wisdom, but Yours. Guide me as I walk by faith, not by sight, trusting You in all things. In Jesus' name, amen.

, live blessed.

TAKE A SLEDGEHAMMER TO FEAR

September 6, 2014

By reading the scripture above each day you will read the Old Testament through in one year and the New Testament through twice in a year. This will change your life. Start Today!
"What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? 33Who shall bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died-more than that, who was raised-who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. 35Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger or sword?" (Romans 8:31-35)

TODAY'S WORD
, if you are a follower of Jesus Christ, fear doesn't belong anywhere in your life. Fear expresses the opposite of all the Christian life is meant to be. It is the complete state of anti-God and is the contradiction of faith. Faith says, Whatever it is, it'll be okay because of God. Fear thinks, It's not going to be okay, and doesn't think much about God at all.

Think about it: God seldom seems further from you than when your heart is filled with fear. Fear is relying completely on your own resources and realizing they aren't nearly enough to sustain you. A fearful, anxious, frightened perspective toward your circumstances is never good and never from God. Romans 8:15 tells us, "You did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear," and 2 Timothy 1:7 says, "God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."

Paul was a master at asking questions to make a point. In the verses above, he poses seven questions, six of which are sledgehammer blows against fear. Along the way, he names our fears: those against us, not having what we need, accusations, condemnations, separation, tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. In listing these, Paul isn't saying these won't happen, but rather that while any or all of these things may happen, they cannot succeed!

No matter what fearful circumstance we face, look at what Paul says we have going for us: "God is for us," "He . . . did not spare his own Son," He will "graciously give us all things," "God justifies," "Christ Jesus is interceding for us," nothing and no one can "separate us from the love of Christ." These are six ringing sledgehammer strikes that can shatter our fears. They are all powerful statements of faith that confirm this truth: fear has no place in the life of a Christian.

To the believer in Jesus Christ, the promise is that God is with us individually, so we don't have to fear. There's a special sense in which God is with each one of His children personally. He is like your closest friend sitting next to you in a stadium full of strangers. He is with you in a way that is different from what an unbeliever experiences-and not only is He with us, He is also for us. As Romans 8:31 asserts, "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

The answer to that question shatters fear with the power of faith in Jesus Christ.

A PRAYER FOR YOU TODAY

Father, what an awesome list of things to say in the face of fear: "God is for us," "He . . . did not spare his own Son," He will "graciously give us all things," "God justifies," "Christ Jesus is interceding for us," nothing and no one can "separate us from the love of Christ." In Christ, every one of those applies to me! I know my problem really isn't fear; it's that I don't remember all I have going for me in You! Help me to make it my continual thought; You are for me, so who can be against me? In Jesus' name, amen.

, live blessed.
